NEW DELHI: An average Indian (factoring in both genders) lived eight years longer in 2009, compared to two decades ago. However, that figure was still three years less than the global average life expectancy (LE).
An average Indian woman lived three years more than her male counterpart in 2009. While a woman lived for 66 years, the LE of an Indian man stood at 63 years. At the turn of the century, an Indian woman lived for 62 years while a man lived till 60.
According to the World Health Organization's health statistics 2011, released late on Friday, an average Indian lived till 65 years in 2009. In comparison, an average Indian lived for 57 years in 1990 and 61 years in 2000.
Globally, the average life expectancy at birth stood at 68 years in 2009 — an increase by two years since 2000.
MUMBAI: That India marries off its daughters in such a hurry that they have little time to grow out of their teens is a fact that no longer raises eyebrows. But what should come as a shock to a country that preens itself over its growing economic prowess is that we fare worse than sub-Saharan Africa, or for that matter, all of Africa put together, when it comes to child marriage.
If that's not bad enough, sample this. The degree to which child marriage is practised in India is more than double the figure for Pakistan, a country we don't quite look up to as a role model. While India would like to believe that it will one day break into the league of countries such as the US and UK, we can take solace from the fact that a worldwide scorecard on child marriage shows that we're better off than Bangladesh, Mali and Burkina Faso. The US and UK dont even figure on the list.
NEW DELHI: Janata Party chief Subramanian Swamy on Friday said he was moving an application in the Special Court seeking home minister P Chidambaram's questioning by CBI and including his name in the chargesheet as an additional accused in the 2G Spectrum allocation scam.
"A Raja (former telecom minister) now has been chargesheeted and one of the charges being that he deliberately fixed the low price for spectrum and thus causing a huge revenue loss for the nation. In view of the fact that the documents and evidence clearly established that P Chidambaram jointly decided to fix this low price, hence if Raja is culpable so is Chidambaram and the CBI therefore is guilty of a lapse in not including Chidambaram along with Raja (in chargesheet)", alleged Swamy in a statement.
NEW DELHI: DMK MP Kanimozhi on Friday appeared before a special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in connection with 2G spectrum allotment scandal in which she has been named co-accused.
Kanimozhi, who is also Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi's daughter, moved a bail application in the court in connection with the 2G scam. If denied bail, the DMK MP could face arrest. Senior lawyer Ram Jethmalani defended Kanimozhi in court, saying that she is only a shareholder in the company, TV reports said. He also said that the entire conspiracy in the spectrum allocation was done by former telecom minister A Raja.
WASHINGTON: Al-Qaida considered attacking the US rail sector on the 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, US government officials said on Thursday in describing intelligence from Osama bin Laden's hide-out in Pakistan.
They said some evidence was found indicating the al-Qaida leader or his associates had engaged in discussions or planning for a possible attack on a train inside the United States on September 11, 2011.
"We have no information of any imminent terrorist threat to the US rail sector, but wanted to make our partners aware of the alleged plotting," spokesman Matthew Chandler said of an intelligence message the Department of Homeland Security sent on Thursday.
