Al-Qaida releases posthumous Osama bin Laden's audio

CAIRO/WASHINGTON: Al-Qaida's media arm released in full a posthumous full audio message from Osama bin Laden in which he speaks on the wave of Arab protests sweeping the Mideast and North Africa in recent months, a US monitoring group said Wednesday.

Pakistan starts Bin Laden inquiry

Pakistan is to launch an investigation into how Osama Bin Laden was able to live in the garrison city of Abbottabad undetected, Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani has told parliament.

But he insisted that allegations of Pakistani complicity and incompetence were "absurd".
US President Barack Obama has urged Pakistan to investigate the suspected network that sustained Bin Laden.
Mr Obama said it had to find out if any officials knew of his whereabouts.
In a statement to MPs about the raid by US special forces which led to the death of Bin Laden last week, Mr Gilani said Lt-Gen Javed Iqbal would lead the investigation into the failures to detect the al-Qaeda leader.
"We are determined to get to the bottom of how, when and why about OBL's presence in Abbottabad," Mr Gilani said.

US presses Pakistan on Bin Laden

US President Barack Obama has called on Pakistan to investigate the network that sustained Osama Bin Laden in his hideout where he was killed last week.

Mr Obama told CBS show 60 Minutes the government in Islamabad had to find out if any of its officials knew of the al-Qaeda leader's whereabouts.
An Obama administration official said the US wanted to speak to Bin Laden's widows, who are in Pakistani custody.
Pakistan has denied knowing Bin Laden was holed up in Abbottabad.
In an interview broadcast on Sunday, President Obama told CBS the al-Qaeda leader must have had "some sort of support network" in Pakistan, but he did not know whether it included government officials.
"We don't know whether there might have been some people inside of [Pakistan's] government, people outside of government, and that's something that we have to investigate and, more importantly, the Pakistani government has to investigate," the US president said in the interview, which was conducted on Wednesday.

Barack Obama's proclamation within hours of Osama bin Laden's killing has come under attack ever since Washington admitted that the most wanted fugitive was actually unarmed. Even if they thought that he was lunging for a weapon, the American commandos are now vulnerable to the allegation that they overreacted and cannot claim to have killed in self-defence.

This is thanks to the universally accepted principle that whenever there is scope to capture somebody alive, the first priority of the security personnel should be to bring him to justice. The prospect of interrogating the al-Qaida chief and putting him on trial for 9/11 would have arguably served the cause of justice better.
