NEW DELHI: "Justice has been done". Barack Obama's proclamation within hours of Osama bin Laden's killing has come under attack ever since Washington admitted that the most wanted fugitive was actually unarmed. Even if they thought that he was lunging for a weapon, the American commandos are now vulnerable to the allegation that they overreacted and cannot claim to have killed in self-defence.
This is thanks to the universally accepted principle that whenever there is scope to capture somebody alive, the first priority of the security personnel should be to bring him to justice. The prospect of interrogating the al-Qaida chief and putting him on trial for 9/11 would have arguably served the cause of justice better.
