KALUWAS (BHIWANI): When the general public has been facing acute shortage of LPG cylinders, domestic gas cylinders were used in cooking the feast for the villagers as well as for the wedding reception of Olympic bronze medallist Vijender Singh despite a ban imposed on use of domestic LPG cylinders for wedding functions and in commercial establishments .
The pugilist who is a national icon and considered a role model for the youth, held a reception, a day after his wedding to UP girl Archana Singh at his native Kaluwas village, on Wednesday. A host of VIPs and celebrity friends of the handsome boxing champion were expected to attend the reception.
A TOI team spotted nearly 20 domestic LPG cylinders of Hindustan Petroleum and Indane being used by cooks at the reception venue near his residence in the village. The chief cook, Satish Kumar, informed that they were preparing various traditional sweets, vegetables and other eatables for nearly 7000 guests who kept pouring in through out the day, besides the reception, for which they needed around 30 cylinders.
There have been many instances recently when residents of various parts of Bhiwani district held agitations due to non-availability of domestic LPG cylinders at gas agencies. "The residents of Delhi Gate area in Bhiwani had blocked traffic at the chowk in protest against shortage of LPG cylinder refills about 15 days ago. Such incidents are routine in other towns of the district like Bond and Dadri. The district administration has issued directions several times against the use of domestic gas in marriages or in commercial establishments", said Pawan Kumar, a city resident, while adding that it was shocking that a prominent sportsman who is also a state police service officer cared two hoots for rule and regulations.
Bhiwani district food and supplies commissioner, Dilbagh Singh Duhan, told TOI that the use of domestic LPG cylinders in commercial establishments and in marriages was banned. "We have been conducting raids on complaints at wedding venues and commercial establishments, and recently we seized around 80 cylinders being used in marriages," he said.
